Cell Symposia: Using Stem Cells to Model and Treat Human Disease

Speaker

Nobuko Uchida, StemCells Inc., USA

Nick BarkerNobuko Uchida is Vice President, Stem Cell Biology in StemCells, Inc. and responsible for discovery initiatives focusing on identifying new stem or progenitor cells, including CNS, human liver, and pancreas. In 1999, she was the first to identify, by a combination of cell surface markers and prospectively isolate the human neural stem cell. Using propriety culture methods, cell banks of human neural stem cells, HuCNS-SC ® were generated for translational research. She set up various preclinical rodent models to evaluate biological therapeutic potential of HuCNS-SC, and led to a “first-in-man” neural stem cell clinical trial approved by the FDA.
